The Nasal Septum

The septum is a thin strip of bone and cartilage that divides the nasal passage into two cavities. Ideally, it is situated in the center of your nose. When it is displaced to one side, either from birth or due to an injury, this is called a deviated septum. A more severe deviation may cause problems for most of people.

Symptoms may include:

Difficulty in breathing through the nose
Blockage of one or both nostrils causing reduced airflow
Nasal congestion, sometimes only on one-side
Nose bleeds
Frequent sinus infections
Facial pain
Headaches
Postnasal drip
Snoring or difficulty breathing at night

MANAGEMENT
We here at Sagar ENT use diagnostic tests and imaging technologies to determine whether treatment is necessary to improve your breathing.
Medical History
Physical Exam
Fiber-Optic Nasal Endoscopy
CT Scans

Although the position of a deviated septum can only be corrected by a surgical procedure, symptoms associated with a deviated septum, such as congestion, can be alleviated with medication.

Surgery for Deviated Septum

Septoplasty is a procedure to reposition the septum to center. This corrects any airflow disturbance caused by a deviated septum.

Under endoscopic guidance we use small surgical instruments to straighten or reposition the deviated section of the septum to maximize airflow through the nasal passages. If the septum is damaged in addition to being out of place, we may remove small pieces of cartilage or bone.

Since this is done as endoscopic procedure, there will be no visible cuts / scars on face.
