Eustachian tubes (ET) are the tubes that connect space behind nose & middle ear space in ear. They permit air to ventilate middle ear & allows drainage of normal ear fluid into back of nose.
ET tubes in children are normally narrower, shorter, more horizontal compared to adults, so inherently have poorer function causing inadequate ventilation & drainage. So, children are more prone to develop negative pressure & fluid buildup in the ear, frequent ear pain and infection, collapsing ear drum, hearing loss.
